Wirral Symphony Orchestra presents: “War & Peace”

at Hoylake Chapel – 7:30pm on Saturday 4th March 2017

  • Tchaikovsky – Symphonic Fantasy: ‘Francesca da Rimini’
    Ravel – Schéhérazade
Butterworth – Idyll ‘The Banks of Green Willow’
    Martinů – Symphony No.3

Soloist: Barbara Ruzsics

Two works both complement and contrast each other in tonight’s concert: Butterworth’s idyll contains both pastoral beauty and dark undercurrents, and although it pre-dates the 1914-18 Great War, is often linked to that conflict. Czech composer Martinů wrote his Third Symphony in 1944, and the symphony sees a transition toward a joyful mood as the dark years of World War II turn at the Normandy Landings.
The stories of Schéhérazade are perhaps best known through Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral suite; Ravel gives a very different, but equally beautiful treatment, here sung by soprano Barbara Ruzsics, returning after her acclaimed performance of Haydn’s Creation with WSO in 2016.
