Wirral Symphony Orchestra presents: “Italia: In the South”
at Hoylake Chapel – 7:30pm on Saturday 13th May 2017
- Elgar – Concert Overture: ‘In the South’
Bottesini – Gran Duo Concertante for Double Bass & Violin
Bruch- Kol Nidrei
Puccini – Manon Lescaut: Intermezzo
Respighi – Symphonic Poem: ‘The Pines of Rome’
Soloists: Marcel Becker (Bass) and Mihkel Kerem (Violin)
The first of two concerts with an Italian theme. Elgar’s In the South bears the subtitle “Alassio”, after a holiday in the town, and Respighi brings the second of his three pictures of Rome, while Puccini’s Intermezzo serves as a prelude to our Italian Opera Gala in July. The Double Bass isn’t often heard as a solo instrument, but virtuoso player Marcel Becker, joined by violinist Mihkel Kerem, here demonstrates just how it can be played!
