It’s 60 years since the death of one the musical giants of the Twentieth Century, and undoubtedly Finland’s greatest composer, Jean Sibelius, and this concert is devoted to his music.
From its shimmering opening bars to the dance-like finale, the Violin Concerto, performed here by Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra leader Thelma Handy, is full of fire and ice, drama and passion.
Sibelius was an ardent nationalist, and wrote much music around Finnish myth and legend. His Karelia music, played here in its original suite format, with Overture and three additional movements, was written as part of an historical pageant, and the Karelia region also provided the inspiration for The Swan of Tuonela, with its evocative and haunting theme on the Cor Anglais.
“God opens His door for a moment, and His orchestra plays the Fifth Symphony” – so Sibelius himself described the opening sunrise of his work, and it continues in its life-affirming message throughout.
