Wirral Symphony Orchestra presents: “A Tale of Two Cities”

at Hope Church (formerly Hoylake Chapel) – 7:30pm on Saturday 10th March 2018

  • Elgar – Overture: Cockaigne (“In London Town”)
  • Saint-Saëns – Piano Concerto No 2
  • Prokofiev – Piano Concerto No 1
  • Suk – Symphonic Poem: Praga
Soloist: Will Bracken – piano

(Almost) like London buses, you wait to hear a piano concerto, and two come along at once! Prodigious local talent Will Bracken returns to perform Saint-Saëns’ and Prokofiev’s most popular concertos, separated by forty years and the influence of two different centuries, yet combined in their wit and brilliance.

The concert is bookended by portraits of two capital cities. Elgar’s picture of London is the confident capital of an Edwardian Empire, “full of beef and beer”. The history of Prague is one of perpetual threat from surrounding nations, and Suk asserts its continued identity in this glorious and proud celebration of the great city.
