Wirral Symphony Orchestra present “A Russian Festival”.

Join us on Saturday 17th Nov 2018 from 7.30pm at Hope Church, Hoylake (Formerly Hoylake Chapel), to celebrate 10 years with our conductor, Jonathan Small.

Sixty concerts. Over two hundred works, including 27 symphonies and 25 concertos,
by nearly a hundred different composers.
That’s Wirral Symphony Orchestra’s creative output under the baton of Jonathan Small, and we celebrate his tenth anniversary with the Orchestra in this concert of Russian music.
And what else would you choose for such an occasion but Rachmaninov’s immense and
glorious Second Symphony?
The saxophone may be more familiar to most as a jazz or concert band instrument, but it’s not entirely unknown within the symphony orchestra. We have a nevertheless rare opportunity to hear the saxophone as an orchestral solo instrument in Glazunov’s delightful Concerto, played by one Britain’s leading players, Wirral-born Gillian Blair.
The concert begins with two contrasting Russian flavours, with Glinka’s rousing overture,
and an expansive tone painting from Borodin.

Borodin – ‘In the Steppes of Central Asia’

M Glinka – Overture ‘Russlan & Ludmilla’

A Glazunov – Saxophone Concerto

Soloist: Gillian Blair

S. Rachmaninov – Symphony No 2 in E  mInor
