Three works each illustrating an aspect of national character. Prokofiev’s suite captures the Russian tale of the fictitious “Lieutenant Kijé”. Dvořák’s early symphonies were not published in his lifetime, and it was his Sixth Symphony that first brought him attention as a composer outside his native Bohemia, and this piece shows him as Czech through and through. By the 1950s Walton had established his home on the Italian island of Ischia, and his Partita draws more on Mediterranean influences than the Elgarian style of his Coronation marches.
