It’s not uncommon to attend an orchestral concert and hear a piece played by only the strings; much more unusual for a performance by the wind and brass sections. So who might break with tradition, if not the most important and influential composer of the 20th century, Igor Stravinsky? Soloist Will Bracken plays the Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments, a piece which, along with the Symphonies of Wind Instruments marks a move away from his previous Russian style, such as his Rite of Spring.
Tchaikovsky’s final masterpiece, his “Pathétique” Symphony – the name means “emotionally deep” – was first performed a matter of days before the composer’s death, and he leaves us a work characteristically full of drama, longing and unforgettable melodies.
